Family:
Obu Hotaru (brother, deceased)
Tsubasa’s Father (deceased)
Tsubasa’s Mother (deceased)

Personality:
As a child, Tsubasa was very quiet and very reserved. This was because he was always being compared to his older brother, who was always successful in his training and missions alike within the clan. However, Obu was always very kind to Tsubasa, so he never really hated him. Obu trained Tsubasa well, however Tsubasa’s abilities were simply not as strong as Obu’s were. His brother understood this, however the clan’s elders pressured Tsubasa to become as strong, or stronger than Obu. In turn, Obu defended his brother, saying that he was only a child and he simply didn’t have the natural skill. He would need to be trained, unlike himself, who was blessed with natural abilities. Tsubasa, because of the pressure from the clan, became very focused on graduating early like his brother, and becoming a very strong shinobi in the eyes of not only his clan, but the village. However, with the friendship of Might Guy and Kakashi Hatake, Tsubasa’s views changed and he became a much happier child.

After Obu’s death, along with his many clansmen, after the Nine-Tails attack. Tsubasa spiraled down into depression. He had become the last shinobi in his clan, although he had uncles, aunts and cousins who were alive, however civilians, he was left as the single shinobi representation for the clan. Although the pressure of being the best was now gone, Tsubasa was never happy without his brother’s presence. It was after this, that he vowed to become the best shinobi in the village, to make his brother proud. Tsubasa, after becoming jonin and soon ANBU, he became much more flamboyant and flighty and was never shy or withdrawn again. This is possibly from the influence of Might Guy, that he was able to come out of his shell. He is somewhat flirtatious, although this is mostly towards Guy.

Background/ Major Missions:

Tsubasa was born into the Hotaru clan, well known for it’s eternal contract to the fireflies. The Hotaru clan originated from Kusagakure, however migrated to Konohagakure after the Second Shinobi World War. Therefore, Tsubasa grew up in Konoha with his older brother, Obu, his parents and the rest of his clan. It was a peaceful life, Tsubasa didn’t have much to complain about. His family was kind and his brother taught him well to become a great shinobi like he was. It was Tsubasa’s goal to become a strong shinobi like Obu and his clansmen.

- Academy
Tsubasa was in the same Academy class as both Kakashi and Guy. He often speculated their rivalry, however was often a shy and withdrawn child. His clan took care of him very closely and disliked him having friendships as it would interrupt his training. Tsubasa was expected to graduate at age 5, like his brother, or even 6 which would be considered late. Tsubasa, in the end, wasn’t a friendly person while he was in the academy and wasn’t particularly gifted either. He didn’t expect to make friends and didn’t make an effort to either. He was often made fun of for having the appearance of a young girl, which was common for his clan, and the teasing often hurt his feelings.

However, one day when Tsubasa was being teased by his peers, one of his fellow classmates stood up for him. Tsubasa was surprised at this sudden intrusion, as no one had ever stood up for him because no one particularly knew him or took interest in him. This person was Might Guy. He stood up for Tsubasa, unknowingly thinking Tsubasa was a girl, and fought off the bullies with his words. Tsubasa thanked him, and it was thought that Guy had a crush on Tsubasa. It was revealed however, during their simultaneous graduation, that Tsubasa was a male which surprised Guy, however their friendship never changed.

- Post War
Soon after the end of the war, when the Nine-Tails attacked Konohagakure, Kakashi and the rest of his peers were barred from participating in the defense of the village by Kurenai's father and other older shinobi. However, Obu and his parents, along with a majority of the clan, were ordered to fight and be on the defense. Tsubasa attempted to join the efforts, however was still barred for joining the defenses. It is revealed later that Tsubasa’s parents, brother and the clansmen who were in the battle were killed by the Nine-Tails. Tsubasa had developed a strong dislike towards Naruto, even if he was harboring the beast from ever attacking the village ever again. However Tsubasa never acted on it, as ordered by the Hokage.

- Chuunin Exams Arc
Tsubasa makes his debut shortly before the start of the Chūnin Exams. It is revealed that Tsubasa has a team of his own, he graduated into genin them at the same time Guy did with his team, however it was their second time participating in the chuunin exams. He stops one of his genin students from having an argument with Guy’s student, Neji Hyuga. He appeared again during the preliminaries to watch his students' matches. He shows disappointment when his student is defeated, however congratulates them on their efforts nonetheless. Tsubasa encourages his students to do well, however shows slight anger when they don’t do as well as he thought they would have. Guy later tells Tsubasa to believe in his student’s abilities, in which he brushes the comment off. Tsubasa later brings flowers to his students who are in hospital after the preliminaries, he also congratulates Lee for his efforts and expresses his sympathies about his condition to Guy.

- Invasion of Konoha Arc
Shortly before the Invasion of Konoha, Tsubasa is seen speaking to Iruka. It appears that Tsubasa had gotten over his hatred for Naruto with his words. Although he says he will never forget his brother, he was old enough to not hold a grudge for something the boy did not do, because it was the monster inside him who was at fault—not the container.
When Sunagakure and Otogakure's invasion of Konoha began during Sasuke's match, Kakashi released a genjutsu along with Guy, Tsubasa and Sakura, and helped repel the invaders along with Guy and Tsubasa. Kakashi and Guy ended up having several contests to see who could defeat the most Suna and Oto-nin, although Guy usually won. Tsubasa cheered from the sidelines for both Kakashi and Guy. After Kakashi gives orders to Sakura, Naruto, Shikamaru and Pakkun to go after Sasuke, Guy intercepts an Oto-nin and uses him to create a hole in the wall of the arena, effectively giving the genin an exit. Tsubasa guides the three genin and Pakkun through the hole and ensures they get through safely. He then wishes them luck. After the failed Invasion, he attends the Third Hokage's funeral accompanied by Guy, mourning his loss, he listens to Iruka's words at the funeral and thinks how sad it would be if the Third had died for nothing.

- Search for Tsunade Arc
When Kakashi was about to be defeated by Itachi and Kisame, Guy and Tsubasa arrived in time to repel Kisame and save Kakashi. When Guy stated that he had called for back-up, Itachi and Kisame left, unwilling to start a war. Tsubasa got Kakashi medical attention, before allowing Guy to follow the two. When he finally caught up to them, he made an attempt at a sneak attack in order to avoid Itachi's Sharingan. In doing so, he accidentally attacked Jiraiya, Itachi and Kisame having already left. Tsubasa arrives shortly after Guy attacks Jiraya. Tsubasa apologises for Guy’s attack on one of the legendary sannin. Guy and Tsubasa learned that Jiraiya was looking for the talented medical ninja Tsunade, and asked that Jiraiya be sure to find her, in the hopes that she would be able to heal Lee. Before leaving for Konoha with an unconscious Sasuke, Guy gave Naruto his spare green jumpsuit, as a reward for his determination. Jiraiya was, naturally, unsettled by this, but Naruto was ecstatic. Tsubasa asked that Jiraiya never allow Naruto wear the suit. He then leaves with Guy.

- Sasuke Retrieval Arc
Tsubasa and Guy comfort Kakashi after he fails to find Sasuke.

- Pre-Shippuden Filler Arc
Tsubasa continued to be sent on missions during the anime's filler arcs, leaving him with very few appearances. When Lee's dōjō went unchallenged in one arc, Guy challenged Lee himself disguised as a stranger, Tsubasa is seen beforehand helping him with his disguise. Although the disguise was very bad, Lee never caught on that it was actually Guy.
Later, in the Trap Master Arc, Guy and Tsubasa led Konoha's available jonin to stop a suspected invasion by Takigakure, though in reality the Takigakure forces were just having a training exercise.

- Kazekage Rescue Arc
Tsubasa is sent by Tsunade to aid Team Guy, who were assigned to disable a barrier surrounding the hideout's entrance. Although they completed the task, they were forced to fight clones of themselves, though each member eventually succeeded in defeating their lookalikes. Tsubasa seemed to have no trouble, having trained against his own shadow clones as a child. After Gaara was rescued, Guy carried Kakashi back to Konoha via a piggyback because the latter was too exhausted to walk there under his own power, due to his overuse of Mangekyō Sharingan. Tsubasa was happy about the sight and cheered Guy on. Their students were deeply irritated by the disturbing sight, although Guy didn't seem to notice, and instead had a race with Lee to see who could reach Konoha first. Tsubasa then explains to the students about Kakashi and Guy’s relationship.

- Hidan and Kakuzu Arc
Tsubasa was seen standing beside Guy and Kakashi, mourning Asuma Sarutobi's death.

- Invasion of Pain Arc
Tsubasa and his team are sent as aid. After the team find Hinata, team Guy soon arrives, Katsuyu later informs them that Naruto was fighting with the last Pain and Guy insists that he and his team should provide back-up, but Katsuyu mentions that Naruto does not want anyone else to get involved, which angers Guy. Tsubasa asks him to clam down and wait for Naruto to succeed. They were then later present with the other villagers celebrating Naruto's defeat of Pain. It appears that Tsubasa has finally gotten over his hatred for Naruto completely, yet not the Nine-Tails itself.

- Fourth Shinobi War Arc
When the Fourth Shinobi World War begins, Tsubasa is placed in the Third Division under Kakashi's command, along with Guy. Still ill because of the effects of using the Seventh Gate, Sakura heals him as a concerned Lee looks on. Tsubasa comments that Guy is always pushing himself too far and seems unfazed by it. He later tells Guy not to push himself to that extent again. With Guy’s recovery, the Third Division comes to the aid of the Surprise Attack Division, restraining Gari when they first arrive.

When fighting breaks out with Akatsuki's reincarnated ninja, Tsubasa summons his fireflies to help protect his comrades from Pakura’s scorch attacks. Prior to returning to the fight, Guy and Tsubasa reminds the troops not to lose their resolve when friends die. After the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist were summoned, Guy tells Lee to chase after Pakura, however Tsubasa tells Lee to aid his teacher while he gives chase to Pakura, knowing that Guy would need it. Tsubasa gives chase to Pakura and uses his Fireflies to find her, afterwards, it is seen that he captures her and then seals her with his comrades. Tsubasa later regroups with the rest of his division to recuperate in a forest, as night fell. However, during the night, Tsubasa’s injuries become too painful to the point where he passed out from the pain. He is later taken care by medical shinobi and is issued to be sent back to Konoha to rest. Before he leaves, he tells Guy to try his hardest for the village, and to tell him what happens when he comes back. He seems to leave on a good note.

Clothing and Appearance:
Tsubasa, in Part I, wears a standard jonin vest over a fishnet shirt which clings to his muscles and ends above his midriff, exposing his abdominal muscles. Below, he wears dark blue trousers and a holster on his right thigh, his boots end at his mid thigh and cut off his trousers. He wears black nailpolish on his toes. In Part II, he removes his jonin vest and instead wears a dark blue tank top over a fishnet shirt which covers his biceps, he still exposes his abdomen. Below, he wears a parted dark blue and black skirt over dark grey trousers and similar, but navy, boots that end above his knees. He wears his headband as a belt and his holster on the left side.
Tsubasa has long, dark reddish brown hair usually tied up into a ponytail or some sort of up-do, otherwise his hair falls down below his knees. His eyes are light pinkish brown in colour with small pupils, like most of his clan. He has an effeminate face and isn’t unattractive. His body is well built with strong muscles, which he likes to show off, however they are not very quick.
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Tsubasa wears the standard outfit of the alliance, and a Konoha flak jacket and the alliance headband. He also wears a holster around his waist in which he carries sealing scrolls.

Justu:

(learnt in Part III)

Summoning Jutsu: Festival of Lights
([口寄せの術・光の祭り] Kuchiyose no Justsu: Hikari no Matsuri)
Hotaru summons hundreds of small fireflies which light up an area or section of land. It is mostly used to illuminate the dark and/ or reveal the positions of the enemy. It has mainly trivial purposes, however.

(learnt in Part II)

Wind Release: Wind Release Stream.
([風遁・風発売流れ] Fūton: Kaze Hatsubai Nagare)
By blowing air from their mouth, the user is able to change direction while in mid-air at high speeds. In the anime, it was shown it can also be used to blow up a dust cloud, concealing one's location and movements.

(learnt in Part I)

Wind Release: Powerful Wind Wave
([風遁・強力な風の波] Fūton: Kyōryokuna Kaze no nami)
After forming the necessary seals, the user simply shoots out a gust of wind from their mouth.

Wind Release: Wind Blade.
([風遁・風の翼] Fūton: Kaze no Tsubasa)
This technique is a pinpoint slashing strike, where the user emits chakra from their fingertips and materialises it into an invisible sword that assaults the enemy in a gust of wind and making a slicing sound.

Wind Release: Wind Cutter Technique.
([風遁・風カッター] Fūton: Kaze Katta)
This technique creates a blade of wind which will cut through the enemy with ease. Unlike most other wind techniques it does not seem to require blowing out the wind.

Summoning Jutsu: Dancing Firefly
([口寄せの術・蛍踊り] Kuchiyose no Justsu: Hotaru Odori)
Hotaru summons a giant firefly with swirling winds. The winds whip up trees, boulders, and other forms of debris, which then rain down on the helpless enemy. The firefly beats it’s wings and can create typhoons or small hurricanes. It is highly effective when surrounded on all sides, when the enemy's position is relatively unknown, or when the enemy is hiding behind a shield.

Summoning Jutsu: Grave of the Fireflies
([口寄せの術・火垂るの墓] Kuchiyose no Justsu: Hotarunohaka)
Hotaru uses his summoning jutsu to summon hundreds, or thousands, of small fireflies to attack the target. The fireflies are usually poisonous and can inflict harm or deter the target and disorientate them. The fireflies can also be used as spies or means of communication.

Summoning Jutsu: Firefly Festival.
([口寄せの術・ホタル祭り] Kuchiyose no Justsu: Hotaru Matsuri)
The Summoning Technique is a space–time ninjutsu that allows the summoner to transport animals or people across long distances instantly. In Hotaru’s case, he has signed a contract with the firefly species and therefore can summon the creature(s) with a summoning scroll and his blood.

Dōjutsu: Eyes of Fire.
([瞳術・火の目] Dōjutsu: Hinome)
Hotaru, while using the Eyes of Fire, is able to communicate with the fireflies that he summons and sometimes see through their eyes and vice versa. Similar to how the Aburame clan can communicate with their insects.

Generic Sealing Technique.
([一般的な封技術] Ippantekina Fū Gijutsu)
This technique is a standard ninja skill which allows a ninja to summon an assortment of items that have been stored using fūinjutsu. Scrolls are the most common choice for item storage.

Relationships:

Might Guy: Tsubasa and Guy were good friends during their academy days. It was because of Guy’s defense against the bullies that picked on Tsubasa, that their friendship developed. As genin, they were placed in the same team and often trained together, Guy aided Tsubasa in his taijutsu, and they were exceptionally close. They graduated as chuunin together, which only strengthened their bond. Even after they both received genin teams, they were both very close to each other. They were often placed on teams together because of their exceptional team work and communication. When not on missions or busy with their teams, Tsubasa is with Guy, or cheering him on when he is challenging Kakashi.

Kakashi Hatake: Kakashi and Tsubasa met during their academy days, along with Guy, they were generally on good terms. Although Tsubasa felt a slight rivalry with the prodigy because his family often compared him and Kakashi, Tsubasa had no ill will towards him. Kakashi and Tsubasa were somewhat of friends, however they were never as close as Kakashi and Guy were. Even so, they eat together and often train. It is not a secret that Tsubasa wants to challenge Kakashi and one day become stronger than him.

Kuranei Yuuhi: Tsubasa often trained with Kurenai, shortly before the Introduction Arc, they were relatively good friends and were always on good terms. He would often seek her aid in matters relating to genjutsu, and of course, other trivial matters. She also enjoys his company.

Asuma Sautobi: Asuma and Tsubasa were good friends, Tsubasa often hinted to Asuma about Kurenai and the things she liked. Tsubasa often had gotten himself into his affairs and enjoyed learning about him and his life, and despite their much different personalities, they had a good relationship as comrades. When Asuma passed away, Tsubasa had mourned for a very long time.

Tenten: Tenten admires Tsubasa, mostly for being able to rise from being a weak, effeminate shinobi, to being one of the most respected people in his field. Tsubasa is flattered by her admiration and often gives her tips on being a good shinobi.

Rock Lee: Tsubasa has a good relationship with Lee because of their connection to Guy. Tsubasa enjoys Lee’s company because he reminds him so much of his good friend. They often talk about youth and their experiences as shinobi. Tsubasa admires Lee for being able to recover from his injuries so well, and still be a great shinobi, despite his lack of talent for ninjutsu and genjutsu.

Neji Huyga: Tsubasa never had a fantastic relationship with Neji. Although he respects his ability as a shinobi and believes he is very strong. He disliked his attitude to become the best. Although, since Neji’s attitude had changed, Tsubasa sees him as a great shinobi and capable of being a great leader.

Naruto Uzumaki: Tsubasa used to hate Naruto very, very much for what the Nine-Tails did to his brother and his family. He had lost almost everything that was important to him because of that dreadful night. Tsubasa held that grudge for a very long time, but had never spoken ill of the beast nor the boy, only containing his anger inwardly. However, it was soon into the story that Tsubasa finally began to get over his grudge against the boy and see him as being potentially, a great Hokage.

Sasuke Uchiha: Tsubasa and Sasuke never officially met, however, he believes that Sasuke should be killed for his misdeeds and traitorous behavior towards Konoha.
