haruhiko and gunji

Haruhiko and Gunji are both runaways in their own respects. Haruhiko, being an ex ANBU operate and a highly skilled shinobi in many ways, he was a respected member of his village and brought much pride to the people. It was simple corruption and Pein’s offer to join the Akatsuki that caused him to stray from his path of being a protector of the Stone village. Haruhiko joined the organization when he was sixteen, making him one of the youngest members to join, he was never fazed. It was clear that Haruhiko was skilled, but when faced with the Akatsuki it was even clearer that he was in a new territory of people who were even more dangerous than himself. He was partnered with Kakuzu however their ties were severed by Hidan when he entered years later.

Gunji, who was a different case to Haruhiko entirely, never even passed his Chuunin exams and instead merely passed his Genin exams because of the pity by one of his sensei. However, even so, it was evident that Gunji possessed skill that was like none other. His ability was seen as a curse, something that thevillageofLightningdid not need in their calm cities—so he was sent away by the government officials to lay in the sun in another country. It was then that he was adopted into the Akatsuki and partnered up with Haruhiko. It was very clear that they did not get along and make no effort to do so either.

Haruhiko and Gunji are known as the “black team” (Chīmuburakku) because of their usual failure of missions and tasks set by their leader. Although they are a strong team, in a sense, their communication is their main downfall to the team’s ethics. Haruhiko is a strong and silent personality who often does not listen to orders and Gunji is a loud and obnoxious person who likes to spit out orders and is often in trouble because of it—often or not he is saved by Haruhiko, which he dislikes.

As far as strength and abilities go, it isn’t surprising that both Haruhiko and Gunji are very strong ninja individually. Haruhiko is the main “attack” of the team while Gunji is the “support” of the team. Haruhiko’s abilities consist of his chakra element, lava, to attack his opponent(s). Although the initial ability isn’t very strong Haruhiko uses it well to deliver often strong and ground shaking attacks. Haruhiko uses his attribute for many power house attacks such as creating plumes or waves to crush his opponent in an onslaught of molten lava or even using small embers to set forest fires. Being rather distant and calm Haruhiko dislikes using his abilities to his highest extent (which annoys Gunji) and mostly uses his attribute to conjure projectiles which are his favourite and easiest method of attack.

Gunji’s abilities differ to Haruhiko’s greatly. Instead of focusing on attack and power housing, Gunji uses his doujutsu to manipulate chakra from the wind. When activated, his eyes become thermal and he is able to see anyone’s veins and nerves. He uses this to detect where chakra is being used and can cut it off by hitting certain pressure points (he often informs Haruhiko of this, seeing as he is not good with hand to hand combat) or cut off blood flow to limbs or the head by blocking blood cell passage through the veins. Gunji’s second stage of his doujutsu is absorbance. When the second stage is activated through use of the first stage, he is able to absorb chakra from anything living and consume it to replenish his own or Haruhiko’s with only a simple, charged touch. However, the drawback is that if he is charged and the chakra is not released into someone else, it may “explode” and cause internal damage to his nervous system or chakra passage. The third stage, and the most rarely used, is field. Through the use of the first two stages, Gunji is able to create a chakra absorbing field where he is able to absorb the chakra of anything that steps into his radius, he is able to channel the chakra into someone else. However, this takes a lot of concentration and much chakra is at risk by performing the technique. It has a high failure rate when there is a small party in the radius, he rarely uses this stage of his doujutsu. Gunji’s other abilities, which mainly entail his wind attribute, are being able to disperse into air as an escape technique or being able to create typhoons to confuse enemies or even dust storms to kick up his doujutsu. Although Haruhiko hates the constant wind that follows his partner.

However Haruhiko does have the power to create powerful landslides or explosions, he chooses mostly not to, and saves it for bigger battles. Being partnered with Gunji seemed perfect because of his chakra channeling abilities, however they only seem to work well when desperate, when they do work together successfully Haruhiko is able to create large fields of lava and projectiles from Gunji’s continuous chakra flow. They are a very powerful team—when they want to be.

Death: Gunji is killed by Kakashi when he is confronted about the Akatsuki and their plans for the Nine-Tails. Gunji and Haruhiko fight off Kakashi, but the backup soon come for Kakashi and Gunji and Haruhiko are outnumbered. Gunji is killed by Kakashi’s Chidori when he strikes him through the chest as he uses his field technique. Haruhiko is weakened and is taken by Konoha ninja and placed in confinement and prepared for interrogation about the Akatsuki. However, he kills himself in confinement by releasing a poison from the underside of his tongue. Before he dies, he thanks Gunji and Pein for allowing him to “see the other side of things.”
